Background
Mordecai was born into a world of wealth and privilege, but his life was anything but ideal. His father was obsessed with his legacy, and regarded his children as nothing more than an extension of this. They were not allowed to have opinions outside what their father deemed acceptable more than that they were not allowed to exist in a manner that would reflect badly upon him. Any children that failed to live up to his expectation were dealt with, and he did not hesitate to neutralize those he felt would never live up to his standards, He had many children with a great number of women, each picked for traits he deemed desirable. Mordecai's mother was one such woman. She was said to be a distant relative, but there are those that suspect she might have been more closely related. Mordecai, however, would never know his mother as she would perish giving birth to him and his twin sister---Mirthe.
This was just as well for his father as never allowed the mothers to raise the children as he found their influence unfavorable. At first, he had no issue keeping the twins together, but when their bond made it impossible to mold them into the manner he desired he wasted no time in separating them. However, he underestimated the depth of the love the twins had for each other and despite his best efforts they would find each other again. This could not stand and he decided that the best course of action was to send one to an early grave and he was going to make the other do it, but try as he might he couldn't convince either sibling to turn on each other. He did the only logical thing left in the situation and killed one himself. He choose Mirthe as he deemed a daughter less worthy, and he made her death as horrific as possible to show Mordecai the price of disobedience. The next time he ordered Mordecai to kill he would do so without second thought.
This lesson appeared to have the desire effect. Mordecai became his father's perfect assassin--killing both anyone his father directly ordered and anyone he might hint he wished dead. He became quite proficient at picking up these hint that sometimes his father had to directly order him not to assassinate someone. Deep inside he was brewing with an insatiable desire for revenge. Mordecai wanted nothing more than to put an end to his father, but his father was a man of many talents--including magical ones that made killing him not an easy task. Mordecai worked in secret, trying to figure out a way to get past his father's defense and permanently put an end to him. However, he would find death himself before he could complete his vengeance.
It was on a job gone wrong. The exact details doesn't matter. The only thing that mattered was Mordecai was laying within a pool of his own blood while his mark slowly limp away. It was inevitable he knew---play the harbinger of death as a mere mortal enough and you will become the one slain. The only thing he could think of was his sister and how he failed to destroy the monster who plucked her too soon from the world. Little did he know that he was being watched by the king of the Sluagh who saw within Mordecai a kindred spirit and been observing him for some time. When the light died within Mordecai's eyes the sluagh king extended him an offer he couldn't refuse--he would become one of his flock and his father's soul was as good as his because none escaped the full force of the horde.
True to his word, the sluagh king helped Mordecai collect his father's soul. Satisfied with a completed purpose Mordecai allowed himself to slip into the horde mentally--traveling across the land with no thought. It is unclear how long he was within this state before he woke up, and while Mordecai doesn't recall much from his time as a mindless member of the horde he did know enough to be wary of the sluagh king's reaction if he discovered Mordecai's renewed consciousness. It, however, quickly became clear that Mordecai couldn't keep such a thing from the sluagh king. The reason for this was each member of the horde was deeply connected to the king that he knew their thoughts like they were his own, and if he was angry it was because Mordecai took his time waking up. He had watched Mordecai so intently while he had been human because he had believed him worthy of being one of his princes--a member of the horde who took control of a section when the need to break the horde into smaller pieces.
He learned everything he needed to be a prince and once again the ages drifted by until he found himself separated from the horde. It is unclear how it happened, but he found the loneliness that arose from the silence to be overwhelming at first. Over time he had grown accustom to it, but finds himself flocking towards crowds due to how comforting he finds them.
